Derby Originals is the original inventor of the 4-sided hay bag, U.S. Patent No. D742,078. Our four-sided hay bags are the only bags on the market that allow your horse to freely eat from any part of the hay bag. These patented hay bags are the result of years of careful study and testing to create a design that is attractive, functional, durable, high-quality, and preferred by horses. Our bags are constructed of reinforced nylon webbing that is stronger and more durable than any mesh or fabric hay bag. These bags are designed with cross stitches at every intersection and bartack stitching at all stress points along the top, sides, and bottom of the bag. This hay bag also features our exclusive Super Tough Bottom®: a grid of reinforced nylon webbing that will never rip like solid or mesh bottoms. Our bags are built tough from premium materials and are designed to last for years to come. This hay bag is designed to be a great everyday feeder for most horses and other animals: it measures 19x18x26" and can hold about 7-8 flakes of hay. This hay bag has 1.75” square openings which will prevent hay wastage and slow down their rate of consumption, but still allow for frustration-free feeding. This premium hay bag also includes a 1-year limited manufacturer's warranty offered by Derby Originals.
- HOLDS 7-8 FLAKES OF HAY - this 19x18x26" hay bag with 1.75" square openings holds approx. 7-8 flakes of Timothy, Orchard, Alfalfa, or any other type of hay. Our hay bags were designed to minimize frustration and can be stuffed in seconds.
- EXCLUSIVE PATENTED 4-SIDED CONSTRUCTION - this hay bag features Derby Originals patented nylon web design that allows your horse to eat from any part of the hay bag. This design eliminates the risk of material rips and tears found in other hay bags.
- SUPER TOUGH BOTTOM® DESIGN - our exclusive Super Tough Bottom® is made of reinforced overlapping nylon webbing. This design allows for superior strength and durability while keeping your hay fresh and allowing dust and debris to exit the bag.
- IMPROVES DIGESTION - horses are designed to spend up to 18 hours a day grazing. Slow feeding allows you to replicate this natural behavior and is recommended by veterinarians to prevent gastric ulcers, colic, and boredom-related behavioral vices.
- ONE YEAR WARRANTY - this hay bag has a 1-year limited manufacturer's warranty offered by Derby Originals. This warranty covers manufacturing defects. Accidental damage or wear and tear is not covered. Contact the manufacturer for more information.

I was looking for an alternative way to feed my horses hay after a visit to the dentist. He was concerned my gelding had tooth absorption issues but the more I thought about it, I was wondering if my feeder had something to do with it. I have the hard plastic rectangular feeders with the plastic grates on top. They've been used for many years for many horses & the grate edges are getting worn with some sharp edges. I still use the base, putting the Derby hay bag inside but leave the plastic grates off. After just a few days, I could see my geldings gums were getting better. No longer swollen & irritated. The soft webbing is perfect for my horses & they hardly have any hay waste. It did take a bit to figure out a good way to tie off the closure though. I feel like there should be a better way to close it but I'm not sure what that is. My first attempts the horses untied the rope closure. Now I daisy-chain it & it seems to be working better for the most part. If anyone has any tried & true solutions I'd love to hear them! Other than that, I'm very happy with my purchase!!
I have been using this for a while now and it is holding up very well.
These are amazing. They do exactly what they're supposed to do... and I don't have to attach it to anything. I just throw them around on their track or in a paddock (any place where it's safe for them to eat off the ground). We get a lot of wind in winter here, so on the very worst days I probably won't use them outside, but these bags are *heavy* even when empty, so I am confident they won't blow away. I could agonize over the hole size, but in the end, I think this is the right balance between small enough to slow them down significantly (and greatly reduce waste), but large enough that they aren't frustrated. And because it's heavy, they don't seem to have any need to hold it down with their hoof. As it gets close to empty, they will nose it around, but I think it's really the perfect choice for something you can just throw on the ground. I love that it's open on ALL sides. I don't have any problem closing it, though I suspect the velcro is not going to last long, and then I'll have to come up with something else. And it will still be worth it.
I'm SUPER happy with this purchase. My horse will gladly rip a hole in a hay net without a second thought so free feeding with a basic net was no longer a solution. The nylon webbing is strong and much more up to the challenge of withstanding a hungry horse than the flimsy nets. He LOVES his cube and "grazes" all day. I love how easy it is to fill and that it's completely safe for my horse to have in his stall 24/7 because there's no potentially harmful hardware or hooks. The only downside is that this really doesn't fit a full half bale at a time, but to be fair, none of these nets ever fit what they claim. It does, however, fit 2-3 days worth of hay as a supplement (my guy gets fed by the barn also in another feeder) or 1 full days' worth of hay if this was their entire feed.
I didn't like when, most of the time, my pony was more distracted by when I was going to feed him instead of staying on task. He just seemed in a slight panic because he would eat breakfast too quickly and just be waiting the second half of the day to eat dinner. Well, now I can stuff this full and he grazes when he wants. The issue I had at first was that, since he was used to just eating so quickly because of being nervously waiting to eat, he was able to rip four seams out of the end of the bag so he could bolt his feed as usual. Before that, he was just shoving it around and making the hay fall out everywhere and I solved that problem by tying it to a post. Then he ruined it. Fortunately the company honored their warranty after I sent them photos of the damage. I believe this is a great idea that needs a small amount of improvement because the horse needs to adjust to it at first. Double reinforcement on the ends would probably do it. The replacement bag should last now that I don't think he will try to get it open anymore.
